Rules and Regs:

Nā Hulu Kūpuna - Waimeaʻs Living Treasures

 

For your safety and comfort, the benefit of spectators, and viewers, and toward the continued excellence of the Aloha Festivals Island of Hawai’i Paniolo Parade, the following rules must be followed closely: 

 

Participation in the Aloha Festivals Island of Hawaiʻi Paniolo parade is by public request as well as by invitation. All participants must abide by the rules and regulations established by the Aloha Festivals Island of Hawaiʻi Paniolo Parade Committee and reserve all rights to make final decisions and choose who will participate.

If chosen, the ʻohana of the kupuna will be responsible for their kupunaʻs unit, unless otherwise coordinated by the AFIOH committee.

 

Entry/ Eligibility:

  • This is reserved for Waimea Kupuna, who is from Waimea or has lived in Waimea for over 40 years. All kupuna must be at least 80 years old to apply. All applications will go to Waimeaʻs Aha Kupuna Council (a kupuna council created by the Waimea Hawaiian Homesteaders Inc.) to be approved and chosen. Applicants must be able to answer questions about eligibility, lineal descent, and contributions to the community.

Mode of Transportation:

  • Vehicles consist of automobiles, convertibles, carriage buggies, pickup trucks, and small trailer/flatbeds.

  • Decorations and beautification are allowed and encouraged. Please do so safely and tactfully. No over-extended decor that will endanger kupuna and bystanders. Simple is best. For example, a bouquet on the car and banners down the side.

Signs: (Updated 9/5/24)

  • The ʻohana of the kupuna will be responsible for their kupunaʻs unit, unless otherwise coordinated by the AFIOH committee. AFIOH will provide each unit with sign/ banner that will say Nā Hulu Kūpuna - Waimeaʻs Living Treasures.

Unit Size:

  • Keep in mind that this unit entry is for honoring kupuna as a Waimea living treasure. This is not an entire family entry; the focus is the kupuna.

  • Family members (moopuna) that fit in the vehicle with kupuna, and up to 3 people walking or riding UTV along alongside kupuna for safety are allowed.

  • Outriders on horseback is only allowed if you have horse drawn carriage. You are required to have a simple pooper scooper that would not take away the attention of the kupuna. Families will be doing different things and will be in different vehicles, horses may get spooked, keep this in mind for safety.

  • Persons allowed must not detract from the entry in any way and the Parade Chairperson will determine compliance.

 

Parade Rules

  • Participants MUST keep positions assigned to them in the parade formation area and throughout the parade to its official terminus unless directed otherwise by an official parade monitor. . 

 

  • During the parade, approximately 60-feet must be maintained between all units unless otherwise instructed by a Parade Monitor. Should the parade stop, close the gap to 30 feet. Re-establish the 60-foot spacing when the parade begins again. 

 

  • The unit may stop if the unit ahead stops or if instructed to do so by a Parade Monitor. Drivers may not stop or deviate from the straight, forward progress of the parade route.

 

 

  • Bands and Specialty Units engaging in counter-marches or other trick maneuvers may not delay the forward progress of the parade. 

 

  • There is no food service in the formation area. Eat a good breakfast before assembling and keep hydrated. However, please remember that the parade route is long, and slow, 2 miles without restrooms.

 

  •    Unit entry passengers. along the parade route unless required because of illness or other emergencies. Notify a Parade Monitor if an emergency arises. 

 

  • PARADE ENTRANTS - DO NOT THROW FLOWERS OR OTHER OBJECTS TO BYSTANDERS. 

 

  • COORDINATOR/CONTACT PERSONS are responsible for making all rules and regulations relevant to your parade entry available to, and understood by, the participants. 

  • PARADE PARTICIPANTS MEETING 

 

Parade formation details will be issued at the annual Parade Participants Meeting on Thursday - September 5, 2024 6pm at Kuhio Hale

A representative from each entry must check in with his/her respective Parade Committee Chairperson - Float, Equestrian, Halau/Dance Troupe, Bands, and Specialty Units - before the meeting. 

 

Failure to attend may, at the determination of the Parade Committee and Parade Chairperson, affect your entry's participation in the parade.
